7th Jukebox 3-30-05
Posted by jader on March 30, 2005

Welcome to this week’s 7th Jukebox, I am your guest host jader. Be prepared for what promises to be a rare glimpse into what makes me…well me I guess. For those of you who read my first foray into internet writing, you may think that this installment will be filled with old school punk and nothing else. That couldn’t be further from the truth. While I still consider myself to be an old school punker trapped in the body of a young professional, I listen to a wide variety of music. This list will show you some of the variance in styles I have. And I didn’t include any of the jazz, classical, or hip hop I enjoy. The first two because I assume you have heard of all those people. The last because it’s all old school hip hop.
Anyway, here are some bands I really like and some you may not have heard of. And yes, there is some old punk in there…I mean what kind of punk would I be if I didn’t push at least some of it on you.

Social Distortion

This is a band I listened to as a kid, but almost enjoy it more now than I did then. They are more a cross between rockabilly and punk, as they all wear white t-shirts, have pompadours, and lots of tattoos. This song is one of my favorites by them, so I figured it could be catchy enough to convert a few of you.
Mommy's Little Monster

The Toy Dolls

The easiest way to explain this band is goofy hardcore that grows on you. I can almost guarantee you will think them crap the first time you listen to it. But give it a chance, in fact give it about 5 chances. You will find yourself humming it at random times during the day and wondering why. They sort of quietly take over your brain and use it to drop in really weird lyrics. For those of you unfamiliar with the Toy Dolls, this is not sped up in anyway, they sound exactly like this live.
Dig That Groove Baby

Sunny Day Real Estate

I am putting up a song from this band’s first album, Diary, as the other albums tend to be a bit more metal sounding. To truly appreciate this album, I think you have to put it in its proper context. This isn't hard driving heavy metal. This isn't garage punk. This really isn't even complex "prog" rock like some of SDRE's later work. This is emo; tracks written with such painful emotion and performed with such soul-wrenching conviction that, whether they meet with your musical approval or not, they will command respect.
Seven In Circles

Sebadoh

I started listening to Sebadoh because of a friend who was into them. I was instantly addicted. The composition of most of the songs is complex, and something that you are almost guaranteed to find likeable. I tend to put them on when I’m working on a painting or something similar, simply because it puts me in the proper mindset. Lou Barlow is a genius, and his music shows it.
Flame

XTC

Look out jader’s goin queer on you. I have no idea what it is about Andy Partridge that intrigues me so. Or why this song is my favorite by XTC. Or why I even started listening to them all those years ago. But I do know that my go to for British alt pop has been XTC for many years. And while I’m on the subject, how strange is it that I have a go to for British alt pop at all?
Another Satellite

The Vestals

An odd combination of 70’s funk, psychedelic pop, and Elvis Costello is the best way to describe The Vestals. This band currently hails from Minneapolis, and the guitarist and part time vocalist, Jeremy Gordon, has the distinction of playing at my high school graduation party. Yes, I know these guys. But don’t take this as a cheap attempt by me to pimp my friend’s band. They have a very polished and accessible sound. So if you like this track, check out thevestals.com and order their debut big label album. Then come to the forums and thank me for pimping these guys in this article.
3 Girls Ago

MC Chris

“Hesh wants sex!!!”
If you get that reference, then you know who MC Chris is. As well as making music, which has been dubbed geekcore, he does the voice of Hesh on Sealab 2021, and made an appearance on Aqua Teen Hunger Force as MC PeePants. From his website, you can download his entire first album, Life’s a Bitch and I’m her Pimp, for free; as well as many remixes and samples of stuff from his other albums. And I am going to see him live on April 23rd which is cool beyond reason. Here is one of my favorites,DQ Blizzard

Dieselboy

This is a pretty big departure from the others on my list, but it harkens back to my days as a club DJ. Dieselboy is one of the best Drum and Bass DJs I have ever heard. He makes everything simple enough to dance to, yet complex enough to listen to at home. He has a fairly large following in the “electronica community” but doesn’t have the celebrity or name recognition of Paul VanDyke or Paul Oakenfold. I think he’s better than both of them combined.
End Of The World

There you have it. My jukebox of stuff I think everyone should listen to. What did you dig the most? What did you think sucked? Come to the forums and tell me about it.

And please if you like any of these groups, show your support by purchasing one or all of their albums.

As always these songs will only be around for a week so get them while you can.

This is jader signing off. I hear the elitist music snobs coming down the hall, so I am going to just hop out this window and make a break for it.

Later.
