Of Baker Street (1986)
Animal
Outfit: Sherlock Holmes Costume / Remains of Don Bluth's Influence Tagline: "The game is afoot!" Plot summary: Basil of Baker Street is the greatest mouse detective who ever lived. In this, his greatest adventure, he fights to save a little girl mouse's father who has been kidnapped by the evil Ratigan. Having lived in the walls of another famous detective, Basil has mastered the art of deductive reasoning, which he puts to good use in avoiding lawsuits when Disney steals the climactic final fight in the clock tower from Castle of Cogliostro. (more) User Comments: I've never been comfortable with Disney's reoccurring theme of adapting famous characters into animated animal caricatures. Robin Hood, Oliver and Me, Robin Williams... And Basil is no different. Naturally, Basil dresses exactly like his inspiration, though due to how long the project was in production, his overall look still has that Don Bluth feel that all of Disney's early 80's animated films had before Beauty and the Beast broke the mold. He looks like someone better suited to chasing after Fivel than fighting a gigantic rat voiced by Vincent Price. Add to this the fact that Stephen Spielberg and Chris Columbus delivered a vastly superior Sherlock Holmes adventure to theaters that same year, and it becomes clear why kids in my neighborhood referred to this movie as "The Great Mouse Defective."
