Outfit: Dog fur / Dog collar / Dog breath

Tagline: "I'm a hound dawg!"

Plot summary:

Copper is the new puppy of one Amos Slade, a crotchety old redneck who spends every winter out hunting with his older, more wizened dog Chief. Slade lives next door to an old woman whose pet is a fox named Todd. When Todd is little, he knows nothing of hunting, or that hunters like Slade and Todd killed his mother. He only knows that Copper is his friend forever, and struggles over that loyalty of friendship throughout the film, as the realization of what nature (and man) has deemed as their true relationship takes hold. Also, Copper is voiced as a puppy by a very young Corey Feldman and as an adult dog by a then still rising star Kurt Russell. That's a talent range along the lines of the difference between a straw pea shooter and a Photon Torpedo.  (more)

User Comments:

Next to Bambi, this has to be one of Disney's saddest films, only here the mother is killed less than five minutes into the film so the kids spend the next 80 in shock or tears. Plus Todd and Copper's friendship eventually ends, creating what has to be one of the only Disney movies without a happy ending besides the Black Hole. And I love it on a child's level for its depiction of the innocence of young friendship. Copper looks much like any other Disney hound dog (and bears a striking resemblance to dogs seen in films like Lady and the Tramp and The Aristocats) but within him lies a depth of character you won't find in many Disney heroes. And you HAVE to love Copper when it comes to this film. Otherwise you're left with a fox voiced by Mickey Rooney. MICKEY ROONEY.
