Plot summary:

When it comes to Disney villains, The Horned King is about as evil and terrifying as they come. Suffice it to say, he'd make Disney Villain mainstays like Maleficent or Cruella De Vil squeamish. It's never explained where the Horned King comes from, nor what his motivations are, besides wanting an undead army to rule the world, of course. And to do that, he needs the Black Cauldron, a rather bland looking iron cooking pot that has been bestowed with dark powers. Personally, I don't see the attraction. My mother's cooking pots have dark powers too, but I daresay what they can do to a person wouldn't be enough to take over the world. Someone's bathroom perhaps...   (more)

I never was that impressed with The Horned King. The Black Cauldron was based on a series of books entitled the Chronicles of Prydain, a fantasy series that has a definite LOTR feel, so naturally they had a very Sauronish villain. In other words, he's just evil. Evil horns, because the devil has horns. Evil red cloak, because demons are always painted in red. A skull face because skulls represent death. Male because in the 80's era that this film was made, the Feminist Movement was in full swing, so only a villain with a penis would be considered believable. Yes friends, there's only one character who's more generically evil than The Horned King.
